Miches Sea Turtle Monitoring and Protection Program

Protortuga is an initiative implemented through an agreement between the El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association PROMICHES and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, whose objective is to guarantee the best conditions for the reproduction of sea turtles on the beaches of Miches and La Vacama, based on a Public-Private-Community alliance that prioritizes resilient and regenerative tourism development in the Dominican Republic.

Its components are:

  • Monitoring and protection.
  • Education and awareness.
  • Research and scientific dissemination.

Protortuga contributes to the following sustainable development goals:

Protortuga has a total reach of about 50 linear kilometers of beach, of which 43 Kms. are permanently monitored during the season, since 2024.

The remaining seven kilometers will be incorporated into the program’s permanent monitoring routes, as it grows and resources allow.
