Miches continues to establish itself as a destination where luxury and sustainability coexist authentically. This season, Promiches officially launched Sand to Sea, a boutique sea turtle release experience that allows visitors to participate responsibly, under expert guidance, in one of nature’s most extraordinary moments: the hatchlings’ first journey to the ocean.
The experience is rooted in the work of Protortuga, the Miches Sea Turtle Conservation and Monitoring Program, an initiative that has protected the sea turtle species that come ashore to nest along the destination’s beaches since its creation. The program currently protects 57.3 kilometers of coastline across Miches and Lavacama, thanks to the joint efforts of community-based coastal monitors who patrol the beaches day and night throughout the nesting season.
Protortuga is one of the initiatives of the Miches Conservation Fund, a collective effort that brings together the tourism and business sectors to protect the destination’s natural heritage. The program is supported by Tropicalia; Secrets Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa; Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa; Zemi Miches All-Inclusive Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton; Viva Miches by Wyndham; Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, as well as other local businesses committed to the conservation of sea turtles and Miches’ coastal ecosystems.
Since the program began, Protortuga has helped save 7,593 sea turtle eggs, released more than 3,018 hatchlings and trained over 1,000 people in marine conservation. During the 2026 season alone, the program has identified and protected 28 nests along the beaches of Miches and Lavacama.
Sand to Sea gives visitors an opportunity to experience this conservation work firsthand through an intimate and educational activity conducted in small groups and designed under strict protocols to safeguard the well-being of the hatchlings and their habitat.
Because hatching occurs entirely naturally, releases cannot be scheduled in advance. Interested visitors may register during their stay in Miches and are notified on the same day that a nest hatches. As the sun begins to set, they take part in a guided experience that includes an introduction to the Protortuga program, information about the sea turtle species that visit the destination and, finally, the responsible release of the hatchlings into the sea.
Each release is far more than a tourism activity. It is an opportunity to understand the challenges sea turtles face from the moment they are born. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of the hatchlings that reach the ocean will survive to adulthood, making every protected nest and every responsible release a meaningful contribution to the conservation of these species.
Sea turtle nesting season in Miches runs from March through September, when leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs along the destination’s beaches. Through initiatives such as Protortuga and Sand to Sea, Miches is positioning itself as one of the few Caribbean destinations where visitors can take part in an authentic marine conservation experience, transforming travel into an opportunity to create a positive impact.
